my new year ambitions + surprise giveaway

That image above? Yes, those are handmade dolls by moi. I'll get back to them in a sec but I just want to keep you in suspense for a bit while I drag you through my insignificant fun goals for 2012! I know, I'm a sly one.

1. Take more bathes. Hold up, hold up. This doesn't mean I don't wash myself regularly! I take a shower every day. But I never ever take a bath. It seems grimy to me. And although I still can't shake that thought, I also can't resist this aromatherapy bath gel a friend gave me for Christmas that makes me feel all Marilyn Monroe-esque when I dip in the bubbles. Sexy and soothing in one bundle? yes, this mama will take it!

2. Leave Evelyn with a babysitter. Still unsure about that one. My heart is weak when it comes to this and I don't know why. She always goes down at 7pm and 99% of the time stays down but I'm afraid there will be some freak time where she wakes up screaming with the sitter, she cries and cries all the while I'm tucked away in a movie theatre, I see my phone ring and it's our babysitter, I tell Jared I want to leave immediately, he might get a bit flustered, there will be terrible traffic on the way home, I'll cry, our once nice sitter will be at the end of her whits when we get home and we'll never leave the home again. I have a psycho brain.

3. Wear lipstick. First off, I am no make-up person. I don't own foundation. Anything beyond blush, mascara and eyeliner are beyond me. I buy NYC, Wet'nWild and if i'm feeling like a superstar maybe Almay. It's not that I wouldn't like to doll myself up more but I'm too thrifty to indulge myself in that department. Also, I'm 25 - shouldn't I know how to do makeup already? Confession - I don't. So it's my goal to go to Sephora and get did up and buy one thing. And I want that thing to be lipstick. I don't think red is my thing so maybe a darker maroon.

4. Stop nailbiting. Uh, this was totally on my list for last year and I did it!.... for about 3 months. This is such an ugly habit and I shouldn't be a quarter-of-a-century-old-mom and still doing it. Gotta kick it.

5. Grow my etsy shop, I think. I'm on the fence with this to be honest. While I like what's in my shop, there's this insurmountable pressure inside of me that makes me hesitant about spreading it's news. I feel like when someone pays for something that I made it has to be prestine, top quality. And while I try my best to make it look immaculate, the truth is that sometimes you will see the glue and threads might show. So I'm afraid of my working appearing as, well, shoddy, when in fact I worked hours on it.

But I think I still like doing it when it is all said and done. That's why I graced my shop with the presence of something new yesterday. Remember that doll I made for Evelyn for Christmas? Well, here's a New Year surprise. This week you could WIN one over HERE! Make sure to visit Bridget, she's a doll herself. You'll love her! Good luck!

  1. I love your thoughts about your etsy shop. I can relate in so many ways. But seriously. Your shop is adorable. And as for the glue and threads, I think most etsy buyers understand that there is a bit of charm that comes with a handmade item. And hooray for a giveaway on Bridget's blog!

  2. Ugh! Nail biting! I hear you. I've been a nail biter since I was a little girl, and had kicked the habit for about a year and a half. Don't know what happened. I guess my life got super duper stressful? Annoying. Trying to kick it again.

I hope you can leave Evelyn one day :) It is always hard to leave, but I end up having a good time, but I also really trust my parents with her.

  6. Kendra, these dolls are amaaa-zing! My 6 yr old loves them as well, as she is super artsy crafty and loves all things unique and feminine. If I don't win the giveaway, I might just have to purchase one. =)
Also, you don't need makeup, but I think a red lip color might just look great on you!

  9. babysitter one. i hear you girl. i have never left parker for more than 20 minutes and i've done that like 3x (and he was with his dad!). i know that i'll stop being so crazy eventually, but right now i can't imagine it. because, naturally, HE WILL BE SCARRED FOREVER if he wakes with anyone but me.

probably not. but the mind of a mom is not always realistic.

  10. Oh Ken, I grew up with 5 older sisters... you'd think by 31 I'd know how to do make up... maybe we should learn together. ;)

25, and your skin,is AWESOME! It wasn't until I hit 30 that the need became apparent.

    CUTE dolls.

  11. I'm going to stop biting my nails for like the 10th year in a row. It's such a hard habit to break but I'm doing good so far (only three days in... ha ha).

Good luck with your resolutions. Leaving your child with a babysitter does sound scary. Our daughter is two years old and has only ever been left with family. Even then it took me until just recently to be okay with it. I'm finally getting to the point where I can relax a bit when she's not with me.

  12. Great goals ! I especailly love the make up one. I am the same way! I literally take 5 minutes to put on make up in the morning for work.
And the dolls are too cute ! Great job making them!

  14. I am so with you on numero tres! I think the whole make up thing intimidates me. But after wearing lipstick for our Halloween costumes it makes me want to wear some full time.

    Cheers to your goals!

I've been looking through yours and LOVE it! What a beautiful baby girl you have!

And the no makeup thing? Wow. You've got that natural beauty thing going on! I don't think I'm secure enough to do that. Ha!

The dolls you made are absolutely adorable!

  17. Baths and lipstick sound like a lovely way to jazz things up.

I hear you on the etsy shop thing, I have wanted to start one but have very similar fears. I agree with shannon though, I think buyers are knowingly going for handmade!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

  18. nail biting! AHH such a bad habit that I have too. I started getting weekly manicures to kick the habit - just till my wedding - then I am sure I will be right back at it!

And I think you should totally grow your Etsy store. But as a pace you're comfortable with.

    Happy New Year!

  26. Way to go with your New Years resolutions. I've made some that I'm feeling fairly serious about, but I'm not about to go and post them on my blog. So go you.

Also, have you never left Ev with a babysitter before?

  27. your dolls are adorable!!
we left our son with a sitter for the first time this summer. and we all survived:) who knew?!

    love your blog!

  28. I'm a self-proclaimed howard hughes hypochondriac so I know JUST what you mean about baths. (not only do I feel grodey but frequent baths can lead to uti's and other nasty stuff)

But it's so nice once you finally do indulge!! I always have green tea, raspberry chocolate, good music and incense and candles on hand. I go all out. I just make sure the tub is scrubbed, and that I've showered recently enough so that I don't feel like I'm sitting in muck. LOL. Tmi?

I don't know how to put on makeup and I'm 24!! You're not the only one. I definitely can't put on lipstick...never tried, probably never will. Good luck to you in all your resolutions, they are really fun-sounding! :D

  29. i am the SAME way about the babysitter thing! so freaked out by that prospect!

  30. I'm 25 and i SUCK at makeup too! And by the by, I love your dolls. They're amazing! And i know just what you mean about etsy, it's a fine line. But your dolls look awesome so i wouldn't worry :)

  31. Oh my goodness, we have so much in common. I wish we could be next-door neighbors and sit and chat all day and fret about leaving our little with a sitter (while biting our nails...oops!).

    ReplyDelete
  32. it's hard to let our babies with babysitter.. i know what you mean it will just break your heart!!!
bath is good just to give some little time for yourself and feel rest and relax..
about your etsy hsop wow had no idea you're so creative dear!!!!
hope you had wonderful holidays and wish you goodluck for this year!!!

  33. Those dolls are so adorable! And the headbands... love. I just may get a slew of things from your shop.
I'm so there with you on #1 and #2. I need to take more baths, more mommy time.
And the sitter thing. Yes yes I feel the same way! I have a 6 month old and all my mommy friends tell me to go out after she's down for the night. She goes down at 7:30, so it's definitely doable but I'm afraid. I'm the only one that's ever put her to bed too, I need to remedy this.

  36. He he he. To get over the grimy feel of a bath, I only bathe on days I wasn't sweaty (that way I feel cleaner when getting in) and still shower off after enjoying the bath. Hehe. :)

Also, I totes understand the "I'm 25 and what is this makeup concept?!" I have never done more than eyeliner and eyes on regular basis... but now, at 25, I wish my mom was the type to have taught me about makeup, or that I was closer to my (now close) sister so she could teach me her ways. I am still beyond naive with makeup. And, like you, cannot fathom spending so much money on the stuff.

AND I WOULD LOVE TO AVE AN ETSY SHOPPE TO GROW! But I need to find a talent I can exploit first.

In conclusion, I like you. Let's be friends.

  37. I just started wearing lipstick within the last month! I am now in love with it! It's not sticky like some glosses are!

  38. amen to the nail biting and baths! I seriously need to indulge in the latter before I head back to the land of the ghetto shower (i.e. standing in your dorm bathroom and pulling a curtain to keep your toilet and sink dry - yes that is my glamorous life)
    :)
