two things that have never happened before happened

thing #1. If I did believe in such a thing as reincarnation, I would take a wager that I was a dog in a previous life. I have such a keen sense of smell. I can pick up on an-e-thang. Sunday morning I was up with Evelyn when I walked by the kitchen and smelt smoke. It was pretty strong and caused me to panic. I thought maybe I had left a candle burning all night or something. After surveying our apartment and not finding a source, I laid back down on the couch to cuddle with Evy Rae. Then massive sirens went off throughout the whole courtyard of our complex. I leaped up off the couch, galloped down the hallway screaming " I knew it! I KNEW it! There's a fire!" I was so proud of myself for detecting such a threat before the smoke detectors even went off but then I realized "hey, you've never been in a fire evacuation before. Your teacher isn't leading you to your class' spot on the blacktop. what do we do?" So we kinda took our time. I mean, we were rushed, but I definitely took the time to pack Ev some snacks and a bottle because we had no clue when we were going to get back in. Ev loved the excitement. It's a good thing that while we were waiting out on the snow covered ground that all the dogs were out as well. That girl gets overly enthusiastic when she sees a furry creature.  I'm sure Jared was just as thrilled to claim me in public as his wife whilst in my evacuation gear - dress boots + pajama pants + sweatshirt + peacoat + make-up less and craz-ay hair = one smokin' wife. Hello, first fire evacuation. I'd like for that never to happen again. {Note: fire not in our apt, but 3 doors down}

thing #2. So I thought that once January hit I would be ignited by the spark of new year resolutions to be better and quit my addiction, to sweets that is. I am a treat-a-holic. I grew up with ice cream every night before bed with a galore of toppings. I kinda carried that on through college but once Jared and I married and I started working for a nutritionist I actually kicked all that stuff aside. I was totally 100% on the healthy train. Then we moved to Virginia and I discovered that I could indeed make the best chocolate chip cookies in the world, so there they have nestled in to my tummy about three times a week. That's in between donut and cupcake runs :) So when this Sunday rolled around and I realized I needed an intervention, I joined my friend's healthy 12 week challenge. For the first time I will be restricting myself to sweets only on Sundays. Bah! Good thing I stuffed my face sick with 3 cupcakes and warm cookies from Friday-Sunday. Thinking about sugar right now makes me gag. And drinking 64 oz of water a day is a lot harder than you might think.
p.s. if you've seen this floating around pinterest, my friend and I decided to try it this weekend. Frosting a cupcake is a lot harder than it looks. It's a true art.

  2. Kendra, I have such a sweet tooth as well! I actually went through a phase (when I first started teaching) of standing in the pantry and eating spoonfuls of brown sugar. Who does that?!! Apparently, I do! Also, a fire? So scary!

  4. That keen sense of smell paid off. Glad everything is okay. Sweets only on Sunday sounds hard to do. I would fail the first week!

I actually pinned that same pin last night. I need to practice before Matthew's birthday next month!

  9. Apartment fires are scary! My sister and I smelled something and then heard something yelling... "where's the fire extinguisher??". Thankfully, everyone was totally fine.

And your cupcakes are beautiful! I just used a Ziploc bag on my chocolate ones- no tip or anything haha!

  12. i am such a sweetaholic! and i've heard that quitting sugar is harder than quitting any other drug (and i'm talking real drugs). i should probably do a 12 week detox too...

  13. Fires are no fun. Our (thankfully) detached garage caught fire while we were in college and burned up my husband's car. No fun at all. And, now that I think about it, neither is cutting out sweets! Good luck to you on that one, since I techinically need to be on that boat as well but keep falling off.

  16. YOU ARE SO FUNNY! I love your good attitude and love for life! I'm a senior becoming a dietitian! I don't know if you use any natural sweeteners, but I just posted yesterday abotu a tad bit of nastiness they do in your body! haha! And I hope I can be like you as a mom! Also, I love the name Evelyn. I'm currently trying to convince my husband that that name is the best for our currently non-concieved child.

  17. Cupcakes are so hard to ice. Good work on the limiting sweets business. It sucks. =)

  23. Well it looks like you did a great job of frosting them! And yes, drinking 64 oz of water each day practically makes you feel like you're being water boarded. Especially if you realize at 8 pm that you haven't even gotten close to 64 oz and you start trying to reach that before going to bed. Not fun.

  24. Smoke is scary - so glad you guys are alright and it wasn't your home! I am known for my keen sense of smell, too! I have never been one for sweets, but cupcakes and cake have been my weakness since I was pregnant. Good luck to you, and I agree, drinking that much water is so hard!!

  25. giving up sweets? so hard! I was just telling my mom today that I have an addiction to sweets - everyday. I haven't had any for two days. It is quite the challenge for me! Good luck!

  26. Three doors down? Girl, you've got a super sniffer! So glad you guys are ok though! That's some scary stuff.
And yes, I was kinda hopping that the new yr will motivate me more to slap my hand when I'm around sweets too. But for some odd reason it's not happening! Dang it!

  27. Maybe we ran in the same pack, LOL...my sense of smell is pretty good too!

  29. Oh yes ma'am.. a serious art indeed! One I wish I could master. I too need to do a challenge like this. And I've GOT to drink more water. I'm doing really poorly with that!

  30. Who knew it would be so difficult! Let's try different frosting next time....that may have been part of the problem. Or maybe we just have no idea what we are doing. One of the two.

You are brave to do the health challenge! I couldn't bring myself to sign up...let me know how it goes.
