I went and got my make-up did.

So. If you recall back in January, one of my 2012 resolutions was to learn how to do make-up. I have never worn more than almay mascara, wet 'n wild blush and maybelline pencil eyeliner. Oh, wait, in college my bff introduced benefit's benetint to me, which I love. But seriously, other than that I have never worn concealer, foundation, bronzer or whatever other cosmetic gizmos are out there. Part of it is because I don't want to be that girl in the photos that has such a powdered face that my face looks like a ghost in comparison to my body, part of it is because I don't want to spend the money, part of it is because i don't want to put the time into it each day, and part of it is because I think make-up looks bad on me {oh goodness, prom was always a disaster for me. Eyeshadow is not my friend but instead turns me into a clown. I HATE makeup}. But if it looks so good on everyone else, there's gotta be a way it can work for me, right?

Yesterday I stepped in to Sephora for the first time. I was like a lost little girl with no sense of direction, hoping that mom would come sweep me away from this awkward situation that was about to go down. But actually, it wasn't all that awkward. Nicole was so great and I instantly confessed to her that i had no idea what i was doing in this store. She prompted me with questions:

Her: Do you like powders or liquids?
Me: I don't know.
Her: Are you a light or dark shade?
Me: I don't know.
Her: Is there a brand you usually go with?
Me: NYC?

You get the idea. She had to start from scratch with me. We went through and found a primer, foundation, and concealer that worked for me. When she was all done I looked in the mirror and about died. Not because she did a poor job but because I was horrified about how pasty white I was! Uhh... summer tan needs to get here soon!

After getting my make-up did, it was then night and day for me. I trounced around the store trying on all kinds of golden shimmery eyeshadows and bold tangerine lipsticks. I seriously gained so much confidence with color in that store. Believe it or not, when I save my pennies I will be getting Smashbox's Fuschia Flash.
It is dang bold. And I love it.

Because I'm cheap, I didn't buy anything but instead went to Target today and got some of e.l.f 's lipgloss and lipstick. I don't recall the shade name but it is some sort of mild hot pink that I am in love with. I'm feeling more girly and powerful each second longer that I wear it. There's no going back....

*** note: this is my first photo ever that I have taken of myself where the camera is present in the photo. It's awkward. But it was more awkward to have someone else take just a photo of my face, so oh well, you're stuck with a pic of the camera hanging out there awkwardly in space.

  1. I think you look beautiful in the picture, Im with you....Im not big on make up for the most part. When we go out for a special night or something then I'll get my face all dolled up but work and what not its just some foundation and thats it.

  2. I'm with you....I go into Sephora and get an idea of what I like then I hit up Target. I just discovered ELF last week and LOVE it. $1.00 everythings are the best. What's benetint?

  3. I have been meaning to do the exact same thing for years! I think I'm just too embarrassed to even go up to the counter and tell them I know nothing about makeup...but I think you've inspired me!

  4. Are you telling me that all of these photos of you you're barely wearing any makeup at all?! That's just NOT fair! Summer tan or not, my friend, you're lucky. I'm about to do a makeup post (I've been asked about this by lots of readers) so maybe we can swap info. I think I've tried just about every brand imaginable, so I've got a few hundred words on the subject:)

  5. You look so cute! I LOVE getting my make up done. It's so fun. It's so easy to get caught up in not getting fancy so going out and getting glammed up is a nice pick me up =)

  6. I love it! I'm a make-up gal myself (love all things MAC, and Sephora is like heaven to me :) but i do totally understand that sometimes it can be so overwhelming! You're beautiful with or without makeup, for sure!! xoxo

  7. I don't even think you need to wear make up, your naturally beautiful (and no I don't lie about these things) but I love this picture of you w the new make up! How did you like the sephora experience? Honestly I rarely use make up, same issues, I don't know how to put it on. For my wedding (the months that led up to it) I made an appt @ Sephora at Fairoaks mall and canceled bc I was afraid they would tease me or that they would do something hideous to me. But I have learned how to do eye make up on a youtube tutorial! I'll have to forward it to you and yes I LOVE Elf! Can you believe how cheap it is!!! Its a total steal! And its just as good as the stuff they sell @ Sephora

  9. jealous you've never had to wear concealer or foundation! ahhh...my bad 15 y/o skin has demanded it ever since i was....15. :) you look great and i love that you refuse to put the big bucks down for it. i found this brand palladio that's all mineral and super, super cheap, but i'm not sure if they have it your way. xo

  11. You look great. I love this post because you went back to Target to get affordable products that are just as good-yes they are. You felt lost in Sephora. I have to have exactly in mind what I need from there or else when I walk in I'm instantly overwhelmed and turn around and walk out.

I will say this though, you look great without makeup too. You are blessed to have a face that doesn't look so different with or without makeup.

And lastly, the disclaimer at the bottom of the post is awesome about the floating camera. I can see what you're saying and it's a cute picture nonetheless. :) Take care -

  12. Oh my, I just got done looking at some of your films. I saw your Christmas film highlights as a sort of x'mas card. And I looked at the independent film, "Meet the Oakdens." You two are great! I love it!!!!! I had to stop myself from watching more as it's midnight here. So funny, sweet, charming and real-I love it all.

  13. I've never worn make up either for basically the same reasons! Time, money, pale face, smothering my pores, watery eyes = smeared mascara and because I simply never learned how! Looks great either way :)

  14. Haha!! I seriously feel pretty much the same way about makeup. It's all trial and error for me, and I have no idea what I'm doing whatsoever. Maybe I need a trip to Sephora too :)

  15. Personally I think it's better when people don't wear any face makeup, except for a little blush maybe! If I had great skin, I would skip that step all together and just use mascara :)

  18. I know it's been a few days...how's the make-up going? I read this post and thought - this is me! I've never worn make-up, and for those exact reasons! I'm curious as to whether or not you keep it up - I'm stupidly cheap but I'd love to be able to put on make-up every now and then - especially as I'm closer to my 30s (eeeep!) than my teens now, and I'm probably going to appreciate wearing make-up sooner rather than later! Let us know if you keep up with a routine, or save it for just weekends/special occasions - I'm curious to know whether it's time to invest in a little face-paint myself! x

  19. This is by no means meant as an insult--only a compliment. You look better without makeup. You look great both ways, but consider yourself lucky to not need the stuff to make you look beautiful. I am jealous.

  20. I like that it looks really fresh, I've had some nasty make-up counter experiences where I end up looking like a tangerine! It's important to take time out to pamper yourself so well done for sticking to your resolution.Rx
