Good read-diance!

2010 was a good year for me and books. I read one just about every month. My selection was below. You might be wanting to ask me, "Didn't you read a majority of those books in high school?" My answer: "No." Which is why I thought I should get them out of the way before my kids beat me to it. And let me just say that I am appalled that A Clockwork Orange is allowed to be read in hs and is noted on "the top 100 books to read before you die list." It was completely disturbing and probably the most revolting text I have ever read.

Although The Catcher in the Rye was not the most uplifting book either, I saw the value in the story. The kid's teacher said something of interest that I even took note in my journal:

"Something else an academic education will do for you. If you go along with it any considerable distance, it'll begin to give you an idea what size mind you have. What it'll fit and, maybe, what it won't. After a while, you'll have an idea what kind of thoughts your particular size mind should be wearing. For one thing, it may save you an extraordinary amount of time trying on ideas that don't suit you, aren't becoming to you. You'll begin to know your true measurements and dress your mind accordingly."

Books are good.
What did you read in 2010? Anything worth sharing? Is The Hunger Games series really that good? {I guess I shouldn't ask that seeing that I read the Twilight Saga. I'm sure I can read anything if I endured that!}

  2. I really liked Glass Castle and Half-broke Horses both by Jeanette Walls. I read voraciously (well, about as voraciously as a mom of 3 can)- about 2 books a week, but I am terrible at recording them/remebering them all, and equally terrible at recomending them. I think you'll have more time to read when the baby comes- all that sitting around nursing. When the girls were born, I read so many books, it was crazy.
    I'm reading a book right now called "A Girl Named Zippy" which is a funny memoir- I'll lend it to you when I'm done. And, I just joined a club called paperback swap (www.paperbackswap.com) to feed my reading fire. You should check it out!

  4. Yes! Read the hunger games!!

    Lone Survivor is good, so is Wednesday's Letters, and The Last Lecture (Both of those are really quick reads). Germs is good, but kind of different! Thanks for your suggestions too! I always like to hear about new books.

  7. Loved the help! Wanting to read tale of two cities. I thought the hunger games was a fun read, but the last one wasn't great. Since having a baby I keep trying to read books but always get distracted. We'll see how this online school thing works out!

  8. That was my 2010 resolution to read a book a month, but I didn't quite make it. Well done on yours. I recognize most of those titles as having read them in English class, but I can't really say that I've read most of them, and I couldn't even tell you what they were about. My main accomplishment (other than taking 2 classes toward finishing my stinking degree) was finally reading Pride and Prejudice, another common HS book that I never read. It was awesome. :)
