The Need to Blog is Strong

Friday, August 21, 2009

I'm sure every blogger out there has come to a point when this question needs to be answered:
Why am I blogging?
What am I getting out of this? and..
what are other people getting out of this?
And that's as far as my thinking goes because for whatever reason I still feel the need to blog regardless of whether the audience is just me or any joe out there. Which leads me to the question of why I'm so comfortable putting our personal life out there for everyone, but that's not relevant. So I'm just gonna keep writing until my updates run out.
We went to Greece!
or maybe the Getty Villa in Malibu...
We decided to be supporters of culture a couple weekends ago and made the 10 min trip to the Getty Villa, which was fantastic! Highly recommended. As we were walking around the courtyard we noticed children on the opposite corridor working furiously on some sort of project. Children always equal fun so curiosity got the best of us and we ventured over. The kids were making perfume! When the administrator told us it was free we immediately dropped our bags and set out crushing our spices, mashing our olives to make oil and combining the two to make perfume. Splendid.
We went to France!
I wish.
We actually spent an evening at the Farmers Market in Melrose which is the cutest market with the widest variety of foods. We were partial to the French creperie. This little stand had the LARGEST nutella bottle I had ever seen! We splurged and got the Napoleon with nutella, strawberries, whipped cream and powdered sugar. Don't judge.
We also went to a FREE Michelle Branch concert after we devoured our crepe.
All in all, a good night.
We've been working out!
With all these confessions of sweets, I have to vouch for us and say that we work it all off AND our meals are super healthy. Jared quit his second job this week in preparation for school starting up again so we've had more time together. Nights spent at the SMC stadium doing stadiums, a mile run and lunges have left me with the impossibility of walking. Jared apparently suffered not from sore muscles but what he claims to be a "splintered" hip bone. What could that be, I asked him. His explanation was that the bone had somehow severed and was loose up there or something. I just googled it. No such ailment has ever been recorded.
Good thing he woke up healed this morning.
Tomorrow we're going on Stay-Cation!
Staycation:noun [C]
(stay-cation, or stacation,or staykation) is a neologism for a period of time in which an individual or family stays at home and relaxes at home or takes day trips from their home to area attractions.

Pazookie to Go!

Sunday, August 16, 2009

So last night Jared and I made our way down to see The Time Travelers Wife. When we got to the theater we noticed a BJ's across the way. PAZOOKIE! However, we didn't have enough time to sit down nor did we want to pay the waiter for the 5 seconds it took him to walk the cookie out and put it on our table. I have to be careful when going out to dinner with JO. Since he gets tipped at both the jobs he works at he feels the need to be overgenerous to all tipped services rendered. Actually, maybe he isn't overgenerous at all but his tipping makes me selfish and guilty since I am not so freely giving of my money. Needless to say, I didnt have to worry last night about tipping anyone out because DA DA DA DA - I have an ingenious husband. He ordered the pazookie to go! Whaa?? BJ's does that? Heck yes! Half oreo, half white chocolate macadamia nut with cookies and cream whipping on top - MMMMmmm! A satisfied woman! And Time Travelers was great! Not as good as the book, but if the movie gets the husband choked up at the end then it must be a winner.

I guess part of this whole being adult thing means that Jared and I have to be informed citizens. We have to know facts.
For instance, if someone were to ask me what I think about Kim Jong-il and the nuclear crisis over in Korea I would just say "Not good." And for the most part I think that people who go around saying "Free Tibet" are just activist posers who really have no idea what the Tibetan plight is or where the Himalayan country is geographically located. It kind of reminds me of the people who voted for Obama.
They must have been thinking this when they voted:

Last night I jumped into bed after having taken a shower and laid there for a bit. JO then asked
"Any shower thoughts?"

Weird. We haven't done shower thoughts in a long time!

"Shower thoughts.. hmm, well I started thinking about how a good chunk of my friends have been married for a ridiculously long time, like Lindsey's been married for 4 years (Congrats Linds!) and she and steph both have babies and Carissa is pregnant. And then I thought, crap what if I can't have kids and its your fault? Or what if I'm defective. I guess we could adopt but I would want one kid of our own to see how cute it would be. Do you think it would be cheaper to do in vitro? How many trials do you think we could get out of that? But if we couldn't have kids the upside would be that I wouldn't get fat. I think I ate pretty well this week, except for I always give in on the weekends. And tonight, I shouldn't have had those 2 cookies tonight. I'm so mad at myself.... What about you? You have any shower thoughts?"
..................
"I thought about how weird it is that my arm can bend like this."
Cool. Thanks husband for showing me how ridiculous my brain is.

I dont like it when the following happens...

JO Text: Babe, I'm off at 10:30! Shall I bring us home a dessert?
KO Text: WHA! Yes I welcome dessert!
JO Text: Nevermind. NO Dessert

Jared works at this restaurant here and occasionally brings home a dessert. Last night was supposedly one of those nights, but there were no leftovers. Sad.
Luckily we had some of this in the fridge:

Thanks Betty, your frosting atop a graham cracker is swell!
Love,
The Oakdens

Thanks Rockstar Diaries for introducing this song into our lives.

A Magical Evening

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

We are probably the WORST Santa Monicans for having lived in the seaside city for 8 months and not once have we set foot on the pier. Granted, I have gone on it in many times before. I think the last time was with all my girls from highschool in 2004 when Steph dropped her cotton candy on the pier after a bug got caught in its stickiness and then we tossed it into the ocean and were afraid the water police were going to see it and somehow convict us of a crime. Yep, that was the last time. Anyhow, the husband had NEVER been on the pier so we decided to venture the 20 blocks down to Ocean Ave and get it done. On the way we stopped to have a photo shoot off the PCH.
Then on to the Ferris Wheel and Waffle Cone Ice Cream!! YUMMM!!

We like it when free things end up being magical.
