Thanks Rockstar Diaries for introducing this song into our lives.

A Magical Evening

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

We are probably the WORST Santa Monicans for having lived in the seaside city for 8 months and not once have we set foot on the pier. Granted, I have gone on it in many times before. I think the last time was with all my girls from highschool in 2004 when Steph dropped her cotton candy on the pier after a bug got caught in its stickiness and then we tossed it into the ocean and were afraid the water police were going to see it and somehow convict us of a crime. Yep, that was the last time. Anyhow, the husband had NEVER been on the pier so we decided to venture the 20 blocks down to Ocean Ave and get it done. On the way we stopped to have a photo shoot off the PCH.
Then on to the Ferris Wheel and Waffle Cone Ice Cream!! YUMMM!!

We like it when free things end up being magical.

Ode to a Husband

Monday, July 20, 2009

Although I lack the capability of writing anything poetic, I will still count these next few sentences as an ode, seeing that they are the thoughts of my most bewitched heart that have me so captivated by my charming husband. JO is THE BEST when it comes to random acts of kindness. He does so many of them throughout the day that they often become lost as common or expected gestures. So I decided that I was going to keep track of my husband acts so that they would not go unnoticed.
Act 1. A couple weeks ago we were getting ready for church and I, in passing, mumbled that I needed to get batteries installed in my dead watches. I came home later that week to find 2 watches sitting on my dresser and a note that read “Now that they’re fixed you have no excuse not to wear them! You look classy with a watch on.” So I wear them because classy is what a girl wants to be.
Act 2. JO goes to work every morning at 6am, meaning he has to be up by 5:15. He still manages to find time to take out the trash and recycling before leaving and I don’t even ask.
Act 3. We were at the beach Saturday and when we got back into the car he had a missed call from the Elders Quorum President asking him to come help a lady move. With no grumbling, he called right back and was disappointed when he found out they were done moving and he had missed out on an opportunity to serve.
Act 4. There is a pin that holds the curtains in our bedroom up. One of them had fallen out and I had been too lazy to put it back in for a couple of days, causing the drapery to hang awkwardly. I can home from work and when I went to pin the curtain back up JO had taken the initiative and already done so.
Act 5. He’s going with me to the Jason Mraz concert in the Hollywood Bowl in October! We’re both so enthused but he let me spend the money to go to the concert.
Act 6. JO always tells me that I have the best ideas because no matter what the task is that I give him, he says it’s a challenge and it makes him grow. He never grumbles, but always strives to be his best. And I don’t always have the best ideas but he makes me believe they are…
Act 7. Every dinnertime meal, we say the blessing and afterward JO leans over and gives me a kiss and says “Thank you.”

More could be said, but that is just a piece of my every-day bliss.

We also had the opportunity last week to attend the Laguna Art Festival
Pageant of the Masters
with my family. My mom, sister and I went a couple of years ago and it was there that my love for the Peter Pan Statue in Kensington Gardens first appeared. If you have never seen it, its is quite a spectacle and more magicical when you're standing there infront of it in the quiet morning amidst the London fog.
This years theme was "THE MUSE." It was amusing. We were glad to have a cultural night out.
Thanks family!

Have you ever wondered…

What it looks like inside the Chinese Graumans Theatre? Well, JO and I have and we decided to resolve that wonderment on Saturday night. It’s fantastic! It’s just one big giant movie screen, with red velvet chairs, high ceilings, Chinese lanterns, oriental paintings and filled with the most enthusiastic crowd I have ever been a part of.
We saw “The Half-Blood Prince” within its confines and it was quite magical. The only complaint I have is that the arm rests did not recede so I was not able to cuddle with JO. BUT it was still enchanting nonetheless. Our next movie ventures are as follows:

<<<<>>>>

My favorite book of all time is coming out in theaters and I have been waiting for it for so long and it’s been in the making for over a year and I’ve been tracking it on IMDB and its rating has always been R but last week they changed in to Pg-13 so now I can see it and my most favorite actress of all time, Rachel McAdams, is starring as Claire and I’m so excited I can’t contain myself and I just hope that the movie is as enthralling as the book (out of breath)!!!!!!

Also, my latest idea is to become a freelance writer because I love writing so much. I miss writing papers on the collegiate level. I miss research. I miss putting words together to make an eloquent verse or profound statement. Maybe I should go back and get my Masters… Maybe once JO is done with his BA.

This American Life

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

JO and I have become addicted to the NPR show
"This American Life."
Before listening to this show, my thoughts about NPR could pretty much be summed up in this pic:
However, after being tempted time and time again by the enthralling stories presented on this radio network, my views of NPR have changed. For those of you who are unfamiliar with THIS AMERICAN LIFE, it is a radio show hailing from Chicago whose aim is to piece together a wide varitey of stories from the American people. Each episode has a theme and a variety of stories on that theme. Some are funny, some are political, some are bogus, some are sad. It is by no means BORING. And the best part about the show? It's free! Go to itunes and subscribe to the podcast or download the podcast on their website. I will give my recommendation. JO and I are rather fond of episode 291 aired on May 8, 2009. It's called "REUNITED." Check it out...

This might sound mental but...

I WANT TO BE A LIBRARIAN!
A full on librarian.
Not the classic librarian though that's boring and decrepit but the New Age librarian that's conservatively fashionable and outwittingly smart.
Why be a librarian, you might ask.
There are many benefits:
1. Short work day
2. Get holidays off
3. Get all summer off
4. Get paid more than a teacher
5. Work with students
6. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LEARNING!
7. I can be a good mom and wife at the same time! Tada!
If my dream of being a librarian doesn't pan out, then I guess I wouldn't mind taking up a job writing articles for Wikipedia. That would also be ideal.

The King of Pop and I share a common interest.

And that interest is whales. Yes, WHALES. And singing about whales. You see, although I have never been a huge die-hard Michael Jackson fan, he has created many memories for me. Every time I hear “Billie Jean” I will always think of Stake Dances or when I hear “Thriller” I think about watching “13 going on 30” in London and afterward all of us girls trying to choreograph our clumsy selves into a makeshift rendition of the music video. But by far the most influential memory I have of the King of Pop is from my 7th year of age. I was in second grade. My teacher was Ms. Apple. We were learning about marine life. I was particularly intrigued with whales. Killer whales to be exact…. My mother had just purchased what was to become one of my most beloved movies during my childhood (in addition to Homeward Bound) –
“FREE WILLY”
I loved Free Willy. So much that I had a dream back in 1993 that I can still remember to this day. THE DREAM: my elementary school was turned into an aquarium just for my pet whale and everyone came to see it. For some reason the dream was set at night time, but I was ecstatic that I had this pet whale. When I woke up from that dream, I was determined to make it a reality. And who was the one person that gave me hope? MICHAEL JACKSON. Jackson produced the theme song of that movie “Will You Be There.” At the beginning of the VHS the music video played. And every time that Free Willy was put in the VCR I would stand there and sing and get so hopeful that someday I too would be the care taker of a whale. At the end of the music video there was a prompter that read something to the effect of “If you would like to adopt a whale call 1-800-***-****.” I was determined to adopt a whale. So I saved money until I realized that when they said “adopt” that didn’t mean you got to keep the whale but rather your money just went to funding whale preservation. And every since then my life has never been the same. (Nor my mothers. She vows that whenever she hears that song she wants to vomit because during my phase of playing that song day in and day out she was pregnant with my brother and the tune reminds her of morning sickness. Great. I can’t wait for that to ruin my life) So to the King of Pop – thank you for funding the hope for one of my most elaborate childhood dreams!

Also, I have never been able to figure out what Free Willy means. Is FREE being used as an adjective like, Hey Willy is now Free! Or is it a verb like, Take action and Free Willy? Can anyone answer this life-long query of mine?

Some People Enjoy Expensive Toys.

Thursday, June 25, 2009

We enjoy cheap toys. We find enjoyment out of the most primitive of video games - a joy stick. I think joysticks were before my era of videogames. The first game station we had was super nintendo. So we're taking it back old school here with games most people have never heard of such as pole position, galaxy and mappy - and of course the one game every respectable person should be familiar with - PacMan. I got it as a present for Christmas from my parents during the college days. I decided to bring it out and let the husband take a whirl. The screen looks like this:

When we play it we look like this:

JO beat Jake Mayorga's top score, which must have been over 2 years old. So congrats to JO! When I beat JO at Mappy he looks a little bit like this:

(This pic is posted for the sole purpose of humoring me. It's funny.)

Also, a year ago this weekend JO and I decided to transcend the world of singledom and jump HEART first into this love deal. Last year JO invited me to his family reunion in Oceanside and it was there on the pier that he told me he loved me for the first time SINCE we were 16. We started planning our future out that night. A little anxious? I'd say so.

Oh what do YOU do in the summertime? WE...

+ PLAY BED & BREAKFAST
We had our first overnight visitor last Sunday! My brother Mason drove down with us from Fresno and stayed the night on Sunday. The evening was spent preparing a quick meal and making a family video starring Mason as the guest on “The Oakden Show”. We’re working on getting our show up here on the blog soon. It’s going to be splendid, so tune in.
+ MAKE HOMEMADE CARDS
I think fathers love homemade cards the best, don’t you? So JO and I spent Thursday evening cutting and gluing our love-woven artistic hallmarks and sent them on their way to our wonderful fathers. Although JO is not a father yet and won’t be for some time, he is a future father so he scored crepes for breakfast and a homemade card from wife.

+ TAKE HIKES IN THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS
It was overcast on Saturday but we decided to follow through with our plans to hike the Santa Monica Mountains. We are so glad we did! It was refreshing to be in the foothills. We were greatly surprised that the mountains resembled that of a Hawaiian hillside with vines, lush shrubbery and twisted branches. We felt tropical.

+ WATCH “UP”
It was good. We enjoyed the evening out but I think we are both partial to the short “Partly Cloudy” at the opening of the movie.
+ MAKE APPOINTMENTS TO GIVE BLOOD
As much as we like helping others by giving of our blood, we like free movie tickets more. We made an appt to give blood this Sat at UCLA in return for 3 MOVIE TICKETS! Tres! Transformers, Paperheart and 500 Days of Summer – here we come!

and we... + FREQUENT COSTCO

Saturday we were getting ready to leave and JO said he was scared. When I asked why he said he was worried because he was actually Looking Forward to going to Costco and might buy something that we don’t need – you know the feeling – walk in to Costco thinking you don’t need anything and all of the sudden something you want or something you have never heard of before becomes a necessity. Good thing Costco doesn’t sell iMacs, or we would be in debt right now over that necessity.

There comes a time when...

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

a woman must become a housewife – when your most prized possession is your front lawn, Costco is your favorite store, nine-inch zippers are found on all pairs of pants, the discovery of a Martha Stewart recipe is your greatest joy so to impress everyone with your domesticity at the next ward function, when looking good for the husband only matters in the company of others and when you dream of freshly painted walls and new furniture. Although I have not ceded myself to a majority of these ghastly housewife stereo-types, I will admit that I do dream of olive green walls, burnt orange curtains and fluffy pillows. SO I bought this yesterday to ease my aching desire to become more domesticated.
The results are going to be Spectacular!
